Documents Reveal Unexpected Future for Disney World’s Cherished ‘Toy Story’ Ride

The Enduring Popularity of Toy Story Mania

Despite opening 17 years ago, Toy Story Mania remains one of the most beloved attractions at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This interactive 4D ride immerses guests in a whimsical world of carnival-style games, all hosted by iconic characters from the Toy Story franchise, including Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, and Bo Peep. The combination of vibrant visuals, engaging gameplay, and friendly competition has made it a favorite among visitors of all ages since its debut in 2008.

The ride’s appeal is universal, attracting families, couples, and solo adventurers alike. Its interactive nature allows guests to compete against one another, adding an element of excitement that keeps them coming back for more. In 2018, Toy Story Mania technically relocated from Pixar Place to the newly developed Toy Story Land, although the ride itself didn’t physically move. This transition placed it alongside other popular attractions like Slinky Dog Dash, leading to some of the longest lines in the park.

Mysterious New Work Confirmed for Toy Story Mania

Recent developments have sparked curiosity among fans regarding potential updates to Toy Story Mania. A Notice of Commencement filed with Orange County indicates that Disney has plans in the works for the attraction. The permit, which is set to expire on September 26, 2025, lists the scope of work as “General Construction,” suggesting that some behind-the-scenes activity is on the horizon. The contractor involved, Adena Corporation, is a familiar name among Disney enthusiasts, known for its history of working on various Walt Disney World projects.

Importantly, the nature of the work appears to be more focused on infrastructure rather than any significant changes to the ride’s story or theming. The permit lists Disney’s Facilities Asset Management (FAM) division as the responsible party, rather than Walt Disney Imagineering, which typically handles creative updates. This implies that any upcoming work is likely to involve maintenance or enhancements that won’t alter the beloved experience that guests have come to cherish. However, it does suggest that the ride may close temporarily for these updates, although Disney has not yet announced a specific refurbishment schedule.

Other Changes at Hollywood Studios

The potential updates to Toy Story Mania are just a small part of a broader wave of changes coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The park, once known as Disney-MGM Studios, is undergoing a transformation that includes the closure of MuppetVision 3D. This beloved attraction will be replaced with a new land themed around Monsters, Inc., featuring a roller coaster inspired by the film’s iconic door system, as well as a show reminiscent of the Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor*.

In addition to these changes, The Muppets are set to find a new home at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, although Disney has yet to provide a timeline for this transition. These developments reflect Disney’s ongoing commitment to refreshing its attractions and enhancing the guest experience, ensuring that every visit to Hollywood Studios feels new and exciting.

As the park evolves, fans are left wondering what other changes might be on the horizon. The anticipation surrounding these updates adds to the excitement of visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios, where nostalgia meets innovation in a magical setting.
