A Journey of Healing: Andrea Johnson and Pure Serenity Spa

Long-serving massage therapist Andrea Johnson has dedicated her career to creating a sanctuary for clients seeking relaxation and emotional healing. Her vision is clear: to provide a safe and nurturing space where individuals can unwind, explore their thoughts, and process their emotions. This commitment to holistic well-being has culminated in the establishment of her own spa, Pure Serenity, located at Southdale Plaza off South Avenue in St. Andrew.

The Birth of Pure Serenity Spa

In September 2025, Johnson opened the doors to Pure Serenity Spa, a venture that reflects her passion and expertise in the field of massage therapy. As a mother of two—teen son Khaleel Bartlett and daughter Kamaria Burrell—she balances her family life with her professional aspirations, embodying the spirit of resilience and dedication.

The journey to opening her spa was significantly influenced by her long-term collaboration with the iconic Rita Marley. For 15 years, Johnson served as Marley’s personal therapist and chaperone, an experience that not only honed her skills but also enriched her understanding of the therapeutic arts.

Influences and Inspirations

Johnson’s connection with Rita Marley was pivotal in shaping her career. “Dean Fraser was the person who introduced me to Mrs. Marley,” she recalls. “Working with the legendary Rita Marley for 15 years was an incredible experience.” This role allowed her to travel extensively, including visits to the White House, where she met various celebrities and immersed herself in diverse cultures.

“Mrs. Marley was always on the go, especially during performances. She was a lovely person to be around, and I learned a lot from her,” Johnson reflects. This mentorship not only provided her with invaluable experience but also instilled in her a deep appreciation for the healing power of touch.

A Diverse Range of Treatments

At Pure Serenity Spa, Johnson combines her extensive experience with formal training from esteemed institutions such as The Face Place, City and Guilds, and Dudley Cosmetology University. Her commitment to excellence is evident in the diverse range of treatments offered, which include sinus cleanses, shirodhara, mud wraps, Vichy scrubs, wood therapy, and red light therapy.

The spa also features an extensive selection of massages tailored to meet various needs. “This is a luxury boutique spa,” Johnson emphasizes. “We have lymphatic drainage massage, Swedish massage, and deep tissue massage.” Each treatment is designed with the client’s unique requirements in mind.

For athletes and those engaged in rigorous physical activities, the deep tissue massage is particularly beneficial. “It caters to people who are part of strong physical activities, like athletes or those who spend considerable time in the gym,” she explains. In contrast, the Swedish massage offers a gentler approach, ideal for those seeking relaxation without the intensity of deep tissue work.

Community Recognition and Support

The dedication of Pure Serenity Spa has not gone unnoticed. Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport, Olivia Grange, attended the spa’s dedication shortly before International Women’s Day, praising Johnson’s commitment to excellence. “Andrea started in a very small way. She has been doing my massage since 1997, and I could say she literally was training when she started with me,” Grange noted.

Grange highlighted the significance of spa treatments, especially for athletes, stating, “It is important because it reduces stress, it relaxes you … it is perfect for recovery, and it is a tool for health and well-being.” This recognition underscores the vital role that massage therapy plays in both physical recovery and overall wellness.

The Importance of Massage Therapy

Johnson’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of massage therapy. As she reflects on her experiences, she acknowledges the importance of her work in the context of sports and wellness. “When I see the top performers, the Bolts and the Asafa Powells and the Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, one of the most important things for them is to get a massage after their workout,” Grange emphasizes.

This perspective reinforces the idea that massage therapy is not merely a luxury but an essential component of health and recovery, particularly for those engaged in high-performance activities.

Through her dedication and expertise, Andrea Johnson continues to make a significant impact in the world of massage therapy, offering a haven of healing at Pure Serenity Spa.
