Honoring a Legend: The Flight of Valor for Mervyn A. Davenport

On March 21, 2025, the Northern California Healthcare System will host a remarkable event at The Redding VA OPC to honor a true American hero, Mervyn A. Davenport, affectionately known as Buzz. At the impressive age of 103, Buzz is not just a veteran; he is a living testament to courage, adventure, and the indomitable spirit of those who served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. This special occasion, organized by Patient Advocate Sherrie Busjahn and a dedicated team of VA employees, promises to be a heartfelt tribute to a man whose life has been defined by bravery and service.

A Dream Takes Flight

Buzz’s journey began in the serene town of Los Gatos, California, where a young boy with dreams of soaring through the skies spent countless hours in his grandmother’s garage. Surrounded by the intoxicating aroma of fresh wood shavings, he meticulously crafted his very own airplane, unaware that these formative experiences would shape a life filled with extraordinary adventures. His passion for aviation was ignited early on, setting the stage for a future that would see him navigate the skies during one of history’s most tumultuous times.

Enlisting in the Army Air Corps

As the world plunged into the chaos of World War II, Buzz’s aspirations took on a new urgency. On September 12, 1940, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps, driven by a profound sense of duty and a desire to serve his country. He quickly became a member of the 316th Airborne Troop Carrier Group, one of the first units deployed overseas. Donning his uniform, Buzz felt a surge of pride, his heart echoing the roar of aircraft engines as he prepared to embark on a journey that would test his mettle and resolve.

Missions of Valor

Buzz’s military service took him across the North African deserts and the battle-scarred landscapes of Tunisia and Sicily. Each mission was fraught with danger, as he transported troops and supplies into hostile territories. Despite the absence of a weapon, Buzz’s bravery was evident in every flight. His service earned him the European/African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal with four bronze stars, a symbol of his extraordinary valor and unwavering spirit in the face of adversity. The experiences he gathered in the air not only shaped his character but also laid the foundation for a legacy that would inspire generations.

A Legacy in the Skies

After the war concluded on August 1, 1945, Buzz’s journey continued as he transitioned to a civilian career in aviation. He joined Gunnells Aviation, where he certified countless pilots, including celebrities, and took on stunt piloting roles in films such as "The Blue Max" and "It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s Debbie." His charm and daring spirit made him a beloved figure in Hollywood, and he proudly became a member of the Screen Actors Guild.

Yet, Buzz’s contributions to aviation did not end there. He later served as a Principal Operations Inspector and Flight Instructor for the FAA, where he dedicated himself to ensuring the safety of the skies. His expertise and commitment to training the next generation of pilots solidified his legacy in the aviation community.

Family and Community

Throughout his remarkable life, Buzz’s family remained his steadfast anchor. After moving to Oahu, Hawaii, he infused his family’s life with warmth and wisdom before retiring in Fresno, California, in 1986. The stories of his daring missions and cinematic escapades became cherished tales shared with his grandchildren, who listened in awe as their grandfather recounted his adventures in the skies.

The Flight of Valor Event

The upcoming event at The Redding VA OPC is set to be a poignant celebration of Buzz’s life and legacy. The schedule for the day includes a ceremonial arrival, an honor guard presentation, the Pledge of Allegiance, and the National Anthem. A special flyover will allow Buzz to witness the tribute from the window, followed by the presentation of a Quilt of Valor, a heartfelt gesture recognizing his service. The event will culminate with Buzz sharing his reflections, followed by refreshments and camaraderie among attendees.

As the community gathers to honor Mervyn A. Davenport, they will not only celebrate a remarkable life but also pay tribute to the countless sacrifices made by veterans like Buzz. His story, filled with courage, adventure, and an unwavering love for the skies, will continue to inspire future generations, reminding us all of the bravery and dedication that define the spirit of service.
