Vikas Khanna, the renowned Indian celebrity chef and filmmaker, has once again made headlines with the opening of his latest restaurant, Bungalow, in New York City. This vibrant eatery has quickly garnered significant acclaim, receiving the prestigious Michelin 2024 Bib Gourmand Award, which recognizes establishments that offer “good quality food for a good value.” In addition to this honor, Bungalow was also featured in The New York Times’ list of the “Best 14 Restaurants” of 2024, highlighting its rapid ascent in the competitive culinary landscape of the Big Apple.

Bungalow opened its doors on March 28, a date that holds deep personal significance for Khanna, as it marks what would have been the 50th birthday of his late sister, Radhika Khanna. Radhika passed away on February 28, 2020, after a long battle with multiple organ failure, Lupus, and renal failure. This poignant connection adds an emotional layer to the restaurant, making it not just a culinary venture but also a tribute to family and resilience.

The Michelin Guide praised Bungalow for its inviting atmosphere, describing it as a “warm and welcoming dining room” adorned with pale pink walls and colorful murals. The ambiance is complemented by a bar featuring intricately carved panels, setting a stunning tone for diners. While securing a reservation may prove challenging, the experience promises to be rewarding. Guests are encouraged to start their meal with one of the restaurant’s unique cocktails before diving into a menu that showcases contemporary Indian cuisine, reflecting the diverse culinary traditions of India’s 28 states.

In her review for The New York Times, Priya Krishna highlighted Khanna’s playful and creative approach to regional Indian dishes. She noted that his ambition demonstrates the evolution of Indian dining in the United States. Unlike many celebrity chefs who maintain a distance from their patrons, Khanna is known for his hands-on approach, often seen strolling through the restaurant and personally greeting guests. This personal touch enhances the dining experience, making it feel more intimate and welcoming.

Khanna’s culinary journey began with the establishment of his first restaurant, Junoon, in New York City in 2010. This venture quickly gained acclaim, earning its first Michelin star within a year and subsequently receiving multiple accolades. Over the years, Khanna has hosted high-profile events for world leaders, including former President Barack Obama, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and Pope Francis, solidifying his status as a prominent figure in the culinary world. Beyond his restaurant endeavors, he is also a goodwill ambassador for the Smile Foundation, advocating for the fight against malnutrition in India.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Khanna launched the Feed India initiative, which aimed to provide food and support to those in need across India. This initiative not only showcased his commitment to social causes but also highlighted his ability to mobilize resources effectively during a crisis.

Khanna’s contributions extend beyond the kitchen. In 2015, he made history by launching his book “Utsav: A Culinary Epic of Indian Festivals” at the Cannes Film Festival. He has also directed documentaries, including “Kitchens of Gratitude” and the series “Holy Kitchens,” which explore the intersection of food and faith. His latest book, “Barkat,” chronicles his personal journey from his childhood in Amritsar to becoming a beloved chef on the global stage.

In 2020, Khanna made his directorial debut with “The Last Color,” a poignant film set in Varanasi that tells the story of a 70-year-old widow and her bond with a homeless girl. He followed this with “Barefoot Empress,” which focuses on a 96-year-old woman in Kerala pursuing her dreams of education. His work in film continues to reflect his commitment to storytelling and social issues.

Additionally, Khanna serves as the executive producer of the Oscar-qualified animated short “American Sikh,” which tells the inspiring story of Vishavjit Singh, an American-born Sikh who finds acceptance and empowerment through his superhero persona. This project underscores Khanna’s dedication to promoting diversity and tackling prejudice through art and storytelling.

With Bungalow’s recent accolades and Khanna’s multifaceted contributions to the culinary and film industries, it is clear that he continues to redefine the landscape of Indian cuisine and culture in the United States.
