Walt Disney World 2025 Roundup: Expansions, New Attractions, and Shows
Walt Disney World is embarking on its most historic expansion yet, ushering in a year filled with new stage shows, attractions, and a dazzling nighttime parade. This transformative period not only marks the introduction of exciting new experiences but also the closure of some beloved features that have been part of the park’s charm for decades.
A Magical Beginning
The year kicked off with a spectacular event as Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts led a victory parade down Main Street, U.S.A. at Magic Kingdom. This marked Hurts’ first visit to Disney World, and he expressed his gratitude for the experience, saying, "Just really soaking in the moment. Just really being present." This excitement set the tone for a year brimming with significant expansion projects and magical moments.
Major Attraction Changes
In June, Walt Disney World closed the beloved Muppet Vision 3D at Hollywood Studios to pave the way for a new Monsters, Inc. attraction. The Muppets didn’t stray far, relocating to Sunset Boulevard to take over the iconic Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster. Imagineers are hard at work bringing Monsters, Inc. to life with Disney’s first-ever vertical lift indoor coaster, which began construction over the summer. This innovative ride promises to immerse guests in a whimsical world where they’ll feel suspended in mid-air, dodging doors and thematic elements.
At Animal Kingdom, the closure of It’s Tough to Be a Bug! in March after nearly 30 years was met with mixed emotions. However, it was soon replaced by Zootopia: Better Zoogether, which debuted in November, offering a fresh take on the beloved animated film.
New Stage Shows
The year also saw the introduction of several new stage shows that captivated audiences. Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After and The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure began performances in May at Hollywood Studios, showcasing Disney’s rich storytelling through vibrant performances. These shows added a new layer of enchantment to the park, inviting guests to experience the magic of Disney in a live format.
Enhancements and Closures
In August, Disney temporarily closed Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin to implement significant improvements, including upgraded blasters to enhance the interactive experience. This ride, which first opened in 1998, is set to return with a fresh look and feel, ensuring that it remains a favorite among guests.
Magic Kingdom also saw the permanent closure of Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America in July, making way for a new Cars-themed land called Piston Peak National Park in Frontierland. This addition promises to bring the beloved characters from the Cars franchise to life in an immersive environment.
Meanwhile, Imagineers are working on the Tropical Americas land at Animal Kingdom, signaling the end of the nearly 30-year run of the dinosaur attraction. This ambitious project aims to celebrate the diverse ecosystems of the Americas, offering guests a unique experience.
Nighttime Spectacle
Adding to the year’s excitement, Disney debuted a nighttime parade called Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away in July. This enchanting parade features beloved Disney characters illuminated against the night sky, creating a magical atmosphere that captivates guests of all ages. The parade has quickly become a highlight for visitors, showcasing the creativity and artistry that Disney is known for.
New Adult Experiences
In a nod to adult guests, Disney introduced its first adults-only bar and lounge, GEO-82. This sophisticated space offers a unique atmosphere for guests looking to unwind and enjoy a more mature experience within the park. With a carefully curated drink menu and a stylish ambiance, GEO-82 provides a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of the theme park.
As Walt Disney World looks ahead to 2026, the park is poised to bid farewell to some of its old favorites while welcoming a host of new experiences. The ongoing expansion and innovation reflect Disney’s commitment to creating unforgettable memories for guests, ensuring that each visit is filled with magic and wonder.
