Savannah Guthrie Reflects on Heartbreaking Divorce: ‘It Shattered Me’

Every morning on the Today show, Savannah Guthrie greets viewers with a smile and an upbeat attitude, setting a positive tone to help them start their day. Her charisma and warmth have made her a beloved figure in American households. However, behind the camera, Guthrie has faced her share of personal challenges, navigating through difficult times that have shaped her resilience and outlook on life.

In a recent appearance on Monica Lewinsky’s “Reclaiming” podcast, Guthrie opened up about a particularly painful chapter from her past: her divorce from Mark Orchard in 2009. This three-year marriage ended in heartache, and Guthrie has rarely discussed the ordeal publicly. Reflecting on this tumultuous period, she described it as “horrible and sad,” revealing that it took her years to recover. “I’m not blaming anyone, but I don’t really want to get into it, you know,” she shared, indicating the deep emotional scars that lingered long after the marriage ended.

Despite her reluctance to delve into the details of her divorce, Guthrie acknowledged its impact on her life. In her religious memoir published last year, she chose to keep this chapter largely unaddressed. “It’s the one thing I didn’t want to talk about,” she explained, emphasizing her desire to convey her experiences of adversity without exposing the more painful aspects of her past. “Some of it was just too personal and too embarrassing,” she admitted, highlighting the complexity of sharing one’s vulnerabilities in a public forum.

Today, Savannah Guthrie is happily married to Michael Feldman, her husband of 11 years. Their relationship blossomed soon after her separation, and she was initially cautious about entering a new commitment. “Here’s what’s never going to happen,” she recalled thinking at the time. Their journey together was not without its challenges, as both had their own commitment issues stemming from past experiences. They dated for five and a half years, navigating their differing faiths and personal histories before tying the knot.

Guthrie has often spoken about the importance of faith in her life and how it influences her role as a mother. “All I know is that I’m trying to have integrity in my faith with my children and in my family, and Mike is there with me allowing me to do that,” she explained. This shared commitment to their values has been a cornerstone of their relationship, providing a strong foundation for their family life.

In a candid moment, Guthrie reflected on her feelings of disappointment after her divorce, particularly regarding motherhood. “When I was 36, I got divorced. I wasn’t married long. That was a huge disappointment. I was pretty sure that I had lost my opportunity and more or less ruined my life,” she confessed. Yet, her dreams of love and family did not fade. “All I ever really wanted was to fall in love, be a mom and have a family,” she stated, revealing her deep-seated aspirations.

Today, Savannah is living the life she once dreamed of, with two children and a supportive partner by her side. Her journey illustrates that happy endings are not confined to a specific timeline; they can emerge from the most unexpected circumstances. Through her experiences, Guthrie has become a symbol of resilience, proving that it is possible to find joy and fulfillment even after facing significant adversity.
