Perth and WA Weather: Severe Thunderstorms and Gale Force Wind Warnings as Heavy Rain Arrives

Severe Weather Warnings for Western Australia

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued urgent warnings for residents of Western Australia (WA), anticipating a series of severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall, and damaging winds. This wild weather is expected to impact the western coast throughout Friday and Saturday as a cold front sweeps across the state.

Rainfall Predictions

Perth locals should prepare for significant rainfall, with forecasts predicting up to 35mm on Friday alone. Bureau meteorologist Mia Williams has indicated that some areas within the city could experience even heavier downpours, with totals reaching between 50 to 60mm. “When the cold front hits the Perth area on Friday, the main things residents will observe is a high amount of rainfall,” she stated in an interview with PerthNow. The rain is expected to persist into the weekend, with an additional 15mm forecast for both Saturday and Sunday.

Wind Warnings

In addition to heavy rain, the Bureau has issued a strong wind warning for the WA coast, stretching from the Ningaloo Coast down to Cape Leeuwin. Winds in the metropolitan region could reach speeds of up to 61km/h. The South West and Great Southern regions are likely to bear the brunt of these damaging winds, with forecasts predicting gale-force gusts between 62km/h and 87km/h for areas south of Bunbury.

Thunderstorm Alerts

A severe thunderstorm warning was also issued for the Greater Perth area at 9:53 AM, with residents living south of the river expected to face the worst of the storms. Key locations likely to experience the heaviest impacts include Mandurah, Rottnest Island, Armadale, Dwellingup, Fremantle, and Pinjarra. Experts warn that the thunderstorms could produce heavy rainfall, raising concerns about flash flooding in these areas.

Potential for Tornadoes

Meteorologist Mia Williams cautioned that cold fronts and strong storms like those expected this weekend can lead to more severe weather phenomena, including tornadoes. “With any cold front similar to this, there is a chance of systems such as tornadoes hitting the coast,” she explained. Residents are advised to exercise caution, particularly near coastal regions where hazardous conditions may arise.

Recent Weather Events

The prospect of severe weather has left Perth locals on edge, especially following a freak storm in City Beach last July that caused significant damage to the western suburbs. The memories of that event serve as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with severe weather.

Safety Precautions

In light of the impending storms, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services has provided essential safety advice for residents:

  • Avoid Flooded Areas: Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams, and waterways.
  • Assess Property Damage: Check your home, car, and property for any damage. If damage has occurred, take photos and contact your insurance company for repairs.
  • Beware of Hazards: Be cautious of fallen trees, damaged buildings, and debris.
  • Stay Clear of Power Lines: Fallen power lines can be dangerous and should always be treated as live.
  • Contact Emergency Services: If your home or property suffers significant damage, such as a badly damaged roof or flooding, call the State Emergency Service (SES) at 132 500.

As the cold front approaches, residents are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during this tumultuous weather period.
