The ArtScience Museum in Singapore is set to host an extraordinary exhibition titled SingaPop! 60 Years of Singapore Pop Culture, which opens on August 2. The exhibition is divided into five engaging chapters, each designed to evoke nostalgia while educating visitors about the evolution of Singaporean culture. Dick Lee, at 68, reflects on this rapid cultural growth, stating, “Culture usually takes generations to evolve, but we’ve done it in just 60 years.” His insights emphasize the unity among Singaporeans that has facilitated this remarkable transformation.
Interactive Experiences Await
SingaPop! is designed to engage both locals and tourists, young and old. Visitors will receive wrist tags that allow them to participate in various interactive activities. These include voting for their favorite local foods, playing games that test their knowledge of Singlish, and even simulating the experience of grilling satay. This hands-on approach ensures that everyone can connect with Singapore’s pop culture in a personal way.

SingaSong: This section celebrates the home-grown music scene, featuring artifacts like a dress worn by singer Kit Chan and glasses belonging to veteran performer Rahimah Rahim. A giant jukebox allows visitors to listen to a curated selection of songs from iconic musicians spanning decades, including contemporary artists like JJ Lin and Yung Raja.

SingaStyle: A sartorial showcase tracing six decades of fashion in Singapore, this section highlights beauty pageants and everyday wear. Visitors can admire pageant outfits designed by local fashion icons Frederick Lee and Moe Kasim.

NDPop: Modeled after an HDB flat, this room is dedicated to the National Day Parade (NDP). It features old-school televisions playing footage from past parades, along with costumes and goodie bag items that evoke memories of celebrations gone by.

SingaMakan: This section delves into Singapore’s hawker culture, showcasing replicas of stalls selling beloved local dishes like chicken rice and kacang puteh. Vintage tables and chairs from actual coffee shops add to the nostalgic atmosphere.
- SingaWho? and RojakLane: As visitors enter, they are greeted by a vibrant retelling of Singapore’s history, celebrating the diverse races that have shaped the nation. RojakLane features artwork and items representing various communities, reflecting Singapore’s cultural diversity.
Immersive Experiences and Final Thoughts
One of the final exhibits, SingaStories, offers a 360-degree immersive experience that captures the evolution of local pop culture through stunning visuals, including iconic landmarks and contemporary AI-generated art.
The exhibition runs from August 2 to December 28, with operating hours from 10 AM to 7 PM on Sundays to Thursdays, and 10 AM to 9 PM on Fridays and Saturdays. Admission starts at $20, and tickets can be purchased online.
