Celebrating Excellence at the 2024/25 Achievers’ Awards
The 2024/25 Achievers’ Awards held at Coleg Llandrillo was a night of inspiration and recognition, celebrating the remarkable accomplishments of students across various disciplines. Among the 20 outstanding further education students honored at this prestigious event was a remarkable learner whose journey exemplifies resilience and ambition.
A Journey of Transformation
Paul Flanagan, the principal of Coleg Llandrillo, highlighted the incredible academic journey of this student, who initially enrolled in the Access course with aspirations of becoming a paramedic. However, as their confidence grew and academic performance flourished, a new ambition emerged: to pursue a career in medicine. This transformation from a seemingly distant dream to a tangible goal underscores the profound impact of education and personal growth.
Flanagan expressed pride in announcing that this learner has been accepted to study Foundation Medicine at the University of Liverpool, a significant milestone that marks the beginning of their journey toward becoming a doctor in the NHS. The principal’s words resonated with the audience, emphasizing the importance of nurturing aspirations and supporting students in their educational endeavors.

The ceremony featured an inspiring address from Bryn Williams, a celebrity chef and alumnus of Coleg Llandrillo. Williams shared his own journey from student to internationally recognized chef, illustrating the power of determination and hard work. His story served as a motivational backdrop for the evening, encouraging students to pursue their passions relentlessly.
Recognizing Outstanding Achievements
Students nominated for the Achievers’ Awards were recognized for their exceptional contributions and accomplishments in their respective fields. Each winner was selected by their department head and presented with a trophy during the ceremony, celebrating not just academic excellence but also dedication and perseverance.
Among the notable winners was Charlotte Smith, who received the A-level Achiever of the Year award. Smith has excelled academically while balancing her time volunteering at hospitals and working 16 hours a week in a care home, showcasing her commitment to both her studies and community service.
Diverse Talents on Display
The awards ceremony also celebrated a variety of talents across different disciplines. Heather Wynne, a Level 3 Hairdressing student, reached the WorldSkills UK national finals and secured a place on the prestigious Calligraphy Cut Scholarship, all while managing a business and raising two children. Her achievements highlight the balance of personal and professional commitments that many students navigate.
Garmon Edwards-Jones, a Level 3 Sport student, was commended for his coaching work with students with profound learning difficulties, demonstrating a commitment to inclusivity and support within the community. His dedication has put him on track to achieve a triple Distinction, further emphasizing the diverse paths students take toward success.
Honoring Excellence in Various Fields
The ceremony also recognized students who excelled in Skills Competition Wales and those who represented Wales in various sports, showcasing the breadth of talent within the college. Aled Jones-Griffith, chief executive officer of Grŵp Llandrillo Menai, addressed the audience, encouraging award winners to take pride in their nominations and achievements amidst a competitive field.
