Breaking Barriers: Women Bouncers Redefining Security Roles in Kerala
In a striking display of confidence and authority, Anu Kunjumon recently made headlines while managing the crowd for superstar Mohanlal at an event in Kochi. Dressed in a close-fitting black T-shirt and jeans, she stood out among the male security personnel, showcasing the growing presence of women in the traditionally male-dominated field of bouncers. This shift not only challenges gender stereotypes but also highlights the evolving landscape of security roles in Kerala.
The Rise of Women in Security
Kunjumon is part of a burgeoning movement where women are stepping into roles that were once reserved for men. Bouncers, who are responsible for crowd management, celebrity escorting, and maintaining order at various events, have predominantly been male. However, the increasing demand for female bouncers at award nights, celebrity events, and nightlife venues is reshaping this narrative. Women like Kunjumon are proving that they can handle the pressures of the job with poise and professionalism.
From Photographer to Bouncer
Kunjumon’s journey into the world of bouncers began unexpectedly. Initially a photographer covering film promotional events, she encountered a male bouncer who pushed her while she was taking pictures. This incident ignited a spark within her, prompting her to question the lack of female representation in the field. "I didn’t like how I was treated, so I gave him a strong push, which knocked him down," she recounted. This moment of confrontation led her to reach out to a bouncer agency, expressing her interest in joining their ranks.
Skills Beyond Physical Strength
At 37 years old, Kunjumon believes that success in this field requires more than just physical strength. "A woman with strong willpower, mental strength, and moderate physical fitness can excel in the field," she asserts. Her experience has seen her manage crowds at various events without encountering significant challenges. "I have handled troublemakers—men, women, and transgender individuals—without any bad experiences," she added, emphasizing her capability and resilience.
The Growing Demand for Female Bouncers
Another anonymous female bouncer echoed Kunjumon’s sentiments, noting that the demand for women in this role is on the rise. "We are hired based on client demands. Women bouncers are now a necessity at award nights, celebrity events, and DJ parties," she explained. Despite the increasing opportunities, she pointed out a significant hurdle: the lack of professional training for women entering this field.
The Challenge of Training
Rakhee K George, who runs Bonfire Events in Kochi, highlighted the absence of a structured training system for women bouncers. "Many agencies simply send physically strong-looking women to events based on client demands. Women bouncers often rely on their mental courage to overcome challenges," she stated. This reliance on personal strength rather than formal training can be a double-edged sword, as it places immense pressure on women to perform without the necessary skills.
Umesh Kumar, who operates a private security agency, also noted the difficulties in recruiting trained women bouncers. "It seems most women bouncers are recruited from gyms. Many agencies deploy physically strong women with gym training," he remarked. This trend underscores the need for a more comprehensive approach to training that goes beyond physical fitness.
The Future of Women in Security
As the landscape of security roles continues to evolve, the presence of women bouncers like Anu Kunjumon signifies a shift towards inclusivity and diversity in a field that has long been dominated by men. Their stories reflect not only personal triumphs but also the changing perceptions of gender roles in society. With the right training and support, women can excel in this profession, paving the way for future generations to follow in their footsteps. The journey is just beginning, and the impact of these trailblazers will resonate throughout the industry for years to come.
